Spotify tells its own story, Loud & Clear

From Jon at Marketing Monday: They write that there are 12 million uploaders to Spotify, while at "the peak of the CD era, only a few thousand artists had their music on the shelves of record stores."In other words, the reason that more people than ever are complaining about not making money from music isn't just because the system is newly bad. It's also because there are more people than ever making music.Imagine if you had a similar influx of participants in any other industry; of course compensation would get weird. And, on the other hand, imagine if you were trying to distribute music in 1960. Your chances of reaching an audience would be slim. There are drawbacks that've come with all of this, but the genuine good is that it's never been easier to get your music heard by people you don't personally know. Court Rules AI Cannot Be Copyrighted: Landmark Ruling on Human Authorship

This decision represents a significant setback for efforts to grant intellectual property rights to creations made by artificial intelligence. The case centers around a visual artwork titled “A Recent Entrance to Paradise,” created by computer scientist Stephen Thaler’s AI program, "Creativity Machine." A label with the works for recording artists in the Florida region, of which several artists have a homebase with as well. This is one of two songs sent my way by their distributor, and although I like both tracks, this one stands out the most as a theatrical sort of number anyone can appreciate. It also has just the right tempo to match the mood I was in the first time I put it on the headphones. The laid-back vocals tell the story, and whether or not you can make out what it’s all about, the chorus takes it over the top and you’re instantly hooked after being led by a good melody. (more...)
